As of May, women own or co-own 35% of the franchise outlets in the U.S.—around 265,000—according to the Franchise Business Review research firm. That represents outlet growth of 24% from a decade earlier, and in the two years ended in May, 41% of new franchise outlets opened have been owned or co-owned by women. And in some sectors, such as interior decorating, they far outnumber their male counterparts.
Popular industries for women-owned franchises are travel and hospitality, child and senior-care services and advertising and sales, per Franchise Business Review. The magazine named as the top five franchises for women in its 2019 list of the top 50 franchises for women Kona Ice, a mobile, Hawaiian-style shaved ice franchise; Wild Birds Unlimited, a retail store that specializes in bird feeding supplies; Keller Williams real estate; MaidPro cleaning and maintenance service; and NextHome real estate.
