My wife is often the last person out of a movie theater. She likes to watch all the credits – where the movie was made, who played what roles, often post-credit scenes.
She came out of Mission Impossible 6 and said I think there were more credits with accounting titles than stuntmen. I said “no way” but then I realized Tom Cruise does his own stunts.
But wait – he broke his ankle during this movie’s making. Turns out doctors thought his ankle would take 9 months to heal. Not with the 55 year old Cruise “I went right into rehab. About 10 hours a day, 12 hours, seven days a week because six weeks later I had to be on set and twelve weeks later I had to be sprinting again”
There is only the water supply of the third of the world’s population at stake, and nothing will stop Ethan Hunt. So watch the movie while going ouch with every stride he takes – much of the filming was done after the ankle injury.
And the stunts would be jaw dropping even for a much younger, fully functioning human.
There is the skydiving scene at 25,000 feet “It took Cruise 106 jumps to get the three takes they wanted, and a skydiver with a camera on his head, falling backward out of the plane so he could film Cruise. The trick for the cameraman was keeping the camera level with Cruise’s face because he shot it “with only a sense of instinct,” said McQuarrie. “The only place we could do this was the United Arab Emirates,” said Cruise about the legality of the stunt.”
There is the motorcycle chase with Cruise on a BMW RnineT going at one point against the flow in the normally crazy roundabout at the Arc De Triomphe in Paris
There is the bathroom brawl which is actually as funny as it is gory
There is the helicopter scene “Though it’s all seamless on screen, that chase and the film’s final cliff-side slugfest were shot in three separate countries under extreme conditions including subfreezing temperatures and an injured leading man.”
Actually, the only low-impact scene in the movie must be the one where Ethan is given his assignment. It is on an old-fashioned tape recorder hidden inside an edition of Homer's Odyssey
