New York City to me was the last bastion for cash. Every time I visited I had to raid the ATM and be prepared. Couple of trips this year have shocked me out of carrying much cash there
a) Most, if not all, taxis now accept credit cards
b) For tunnels and bridges I have used Avis eToll – also quicker than the cash lane
c) Many subway station vending machines accept ATM cards – the old “tokens” are digitized
d) The Starbucks mobile app allows you to tip baristas
In fact, I used cash only to tip the hotel room staff and to buy a bottle of water at a bodega.
Of course, I got a dirty look from the hotel bellman when I did not have tip money for him :)
