The concept of using the veins in the whites of the eye was discovered by Dr. Reza Derakhshani in 2006 at University of Missouri, Kansas City . In 2008, a patent was issued that covers the very concept of using the blood vessels seen in the whites of the eye as a unique identifier. For 6 years, the algorithms and technology was developed in the university setting. In January of 2012, Toby Rush licensed the technology out of UMKC and created EyeVerify.
