Traffic analysts have crunched drivers’ cell phone data to come up
with an interesting finding on how to relieve congestion around cities
during rush hours.
Researchers found that canceling one percent of driving trips around the city did little to alleviate tie-ups, but taking the same amount of drivers off the road from key neighborhoods that feed traffic arteries could cut extra driving time caused by congestion by 18 percent for all drivers in a metropolitan area.
Scientists at MIT, China’s Central South University, the University of California at Berkeley and the Austrian Institute of Technology contributed to the study.
