For years the Tampa Police Department has been using a piece of technology called E-Sponder to communicate with each other during major events such as the Gasparilla Parade, Super Bowls and any other events at Raymond James Stadium.
But with the Republican National Convention happening in late August, several months ago Mayor Bob Buckhorn asked the TPD if the company that makes the technology — Southern California-based NC4 — could expand it so that information could be freely exchanged with downtown businesses and building owners on things like road closures, building closings and the like.
NC4 did, developing the somewhat ominous-sounding Situational Awareness Solution. On Monday Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said the new technology will be used by the TPD to "push out and receive information by businesses directly affected by the RNC."
