USB 3.0 is almost upon us, so we decided we are going to bring you a list of things you need to know (Vinnie’s note – this is an edited list)
- For one thing it’s fast, I mean REALLY fast. It will offer transfer speeds of up to 4.8 Gbps. USB 2.0 only goes up to 480 Mbps
- It’s energy efficient by supporting reduced power operation and an idle power mode. The downfall this provides as a result is heavy workload by the CPU trying to keep up with the faster data tranfer rate.
- Vendors back it. AMD and Nvidia were upset at Intel for holding back on some specification details, but have since put it behind them.
- With the high data transfer rate, it will end the long reign of the Firewire since data transfer will be faster to your external hard drive.
- Devices that inherently provide large data storage will probably be the first to utilize the 3.0 standard. These types of products include;Large flash drives, hard drives, video cameras and high-end cameras.
- It will most likely result in a push towards an anti-cloud web. Since you will be able to access tons of information on your hard drive at such a fast rate, you wont have to download or stream things as often. That might be handy if strict data caps are implemented or you think you’ll be without broadband for a while.
