In Ireland this past weekend my credit cards did not work in a couple of places - the readers could only process cards with chips and PIN numbers. I looked at my fat wallet and said it's time to get rid of cards and move to mobile payments.
This PC Today article describes how SMS (Short Message Service), WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), and NFC (Near Field Communication) are allowing us to do so.
Then I realized my phone could not get on the local mobile network all weekend long.
Fortunately the ATM machine worked, and I did not have to wash dishes at the restaurant :)
