"Cars could become scouts for snowplows, pothole repair crews, police officers, ambulance drivers and even medevac helicopter pilots. Much of the technology is already available in many cars; what’s missing is a system to communicate the information to the authorities.
“Once you have the ability to gather data from all the cars on a roadway network, and a back-end computer, you would have all kinds of capability to take action,” said Ralph Robinson, of the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute and an expert in vehicle infrastructure integration, an emerging field."
