At a recent conference, I heard Ray Lane of Kleiner Perkins use the term "biomimetrics" - the science of mimicking nature.
Then I read New Scientist describe Tribology, the study of where surfaces meet. 'It's about friction, lubrication, and wear, and is important in matters that range from casting metal to knee surgery."
And Wikipedia describes mechatronics - the synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic and software engineering. I thought those were called mashups -)
With so much happening in New Florence, why should we be surprised with all these new branches of science?
