Last night as I braved another winter strom (must be global warming or the IRS strinking early), I marveled at the OR which goes in to re-routing airlines and passengers when the wet stuff hits. Then I read Jason Busch's post on the optimization that goes in to the MLB schedule. The name George Nemhauser sounded familiar - sure enough this professor at Georgia Inst of Technology has helped with airline scheduling, baseball schedules and a lot more. Developing a viable MLB schedule involved 12 high-performance computers running virtually non-stop for five months. Bet he did not factor the combination of snow and baseball which ruined the Cleveland home opener -)
