TheTechnology Review reports a key component in MIT Labs plans for an affordable laptop for emerging markets has fallen in place : an efficient, human-powered generator that
could make the computer practical for children living in areas without
reliable, affordable electricity.
The $100 dollar laptop will include a 7.5-inch
screen, a 500 megahertz processor, 500 megabytes of Flash memory, and
wireless broadband for forming impromptu networks with other laptops.
Taking a very different approach, but just as impactful, is John Wood who left Microsoft to form Room to Read. He builds libraries and computer labs in countries like Nepal and Cambodia - at an average cost of $ 2,000.
That's innovation at the "Bottom of the Pyramid"
Update: India does not believe the $ 100 laptop is ready for prime time
