28 years ago, BA 9 lost all four engines while flying through volcanic ash. Amazing story of how the crew managed to land safely here. in 1989, KL 867 had a similar experience. Both were 747s with 4 engines.

So, it is good to see Lufthansa, KLM and others conduct tests to see how the latest Iceland eruption is affecting planes. I know this is extremely disruptive to travel (I have plans to go to Germany Saturday) but with today’s 2 engine planes flying across the Atlantic, we have even less of a safety net.
